Replaced a clutch cable on ZXR 400 and now it will not shift out of neutral, any ideas?

Hi, about 4 days ago the clutch cable snapped on my ZXR 400 2001 L9 so I bought a replacement. Upon finally removing the fairings and replacing the lead with a brand new one (made to the correct length from wee-moto) the bike will not shift out of neutral. The lever does move up and down but just doesn't seam to shift into first or any other gear - the neutral light does go out but then re-illuminates as the lever does not click into first. Any ideas?
