Where Did These "Stars Of Bethelem" Come From?

Five years ago a friend gave me a cutting(no dirt ball) from a fig which I planted and it's now a thriving tree. Stars of Bethlehem are coming up around the roots. Where did they come from? I've lived here for 36 years, I never had these before. Decades ago this property was a nursery, could they have been dormant all this time?
