Why would biologists want to maintain habitat corridors & unoccupied habitat suitable for species in question?

I understand what a habitat corridor is and its benefits but I don't really understand the significance of unoccupied habitats for species affected by fragmentation. Any help would be appreciated. I just need to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks in advance!
