Why would it be impressive if someone only turns to God during bad times?

I often hear testimonies about people becoming believers because they were in some life-threatening situation or because they were addicted to drugs or alcohol, but isn't that merely believing out of neediness and not genuine faith. Anybody can feel like turning to God during bad times because desperation prevents them from thinking rationally and makes them willing to believe anything. If someone who was already doing fine without God and with no emotional motive for believing like if bill gates decided to give away all his money and devote their life to God, then wouldn't that be more impressive.
