Why don't people understand the difference between Latin American and European immigration?
The same standards and procedures that were applied to European immigrants cannot be applied to Latin American immigrants because there is a historical factor that must be accounted for. Latinos coming to the US enter a region that used to be and in some ways still is, culturally speaking, their's. There's no way that we can expect Latinos to leave Spanish behind and simply "integrate" into our culture when the language and culture is being constantly reinforced and when Mexico is usually just miles away. Europeans had to cross and ocean and after a little while the immigration from Europe stopped and thus European immigrants were able to integrate but Latinos don't follow the same path, shouldn't our approach to thier immigrant status follow a different path as well?
