The great change of the 1700s was the incresed exercise of power by the PM on bahalf of the monarch. When George I came to power, he spoke no english and through necessity, his ministers held most of the reigns of government. By the time his son, George II, came to power it had been twenty or more years with the PM in control. In the British system, tradition means everything and if something is done for twenty years it is likely it will stay that way
